Overall health, well-being and quality of life before medical cannabis

In 1981, I lost the use of my right hand and could not even hold a pen to sign my name.  Finally, the doctors found that I had a dime sized spur on my cervical spine that had to be removed. The surgery was done, but….it did not heal properly, leaving me with a curved spine and a lot of pain. Over the years I tried several different kinds of work only to find that every job I tried, I could not do because of pain in my neck and back. This is where the depression set in.  Because I could not work, I had to depend on my wonderful husband to help me to survive. I felt as though I was a burden and lost my lust for life.  By 1990 I decided to apply for a disability.  I was in so much pain and was on so much medication at the time that I began to live in a “Fog”.  I was numb to most of life and so very young at the time. Of course, the Gov. would not approve my disability at first and it took 10 years for them to accept the fact that I was disabled in so very many ways. It took so very much energy for me to fill out forms, go to doctors, take more medication, and still try to survive.  I was taking 120 mg. of Morphine a day besides muscle relaxants, depression meds., etc.  just to survive, again, I lived in a “Fog”.

Additional info about this time in patient's life

I was not afraid to use cannabis, as I had used it for recreational purposes in the past when I was very young. It was something that I used when just chilling with some folks and I enjoyed the feeling I received from it but never ever thought about it for relief of pain, etc. I wish I had known then what I know now regarding cannabis. It could have saved me from a lot of years of suffering and thinking that Pharma Drugs were the answer. I feel that it is an herb that is very useful for many disorders and should be legal for anyone who chooses to use it. It calms the mind and the body and puts one's body back to where it needs to be.

Patient Process

Path to cannabis

One morning, I was listening to a radio talk show that featured a gentleman who was speaking about medical cannabis and how it was helping so very many people. This lit a spark in me.  His name was Paul John and he was the President of a Company called Cann-Trust, here in Ontario Canada.  He gave out his phone number on the talk show and I wrote it down.  After a few days of discussing this with my husband I decided to call and see if they could help me.  The information I received was mind-blowing to say the least.  I spoke next with my Doctor, who was a little wary of the idea.  We still discussed it, and the fact remained, that the only other solution was to have a metal rod put in my spine to help stop some of the degenerative disc disease and curvature of my spine. I could not take any more medication, so I was up against a wall.  I wanted to get off of the Morphine and I believed that the cannabis could help me to do it. Well, it took 2 years to go from 120 mg. of Morphine a day, to 30 mg. a day.  The “Fog” had lifted. I was using less than a gram of cannabis a day and it helped me to drop all of that Morphine.  There were some rough times, but I did it !  I wrote a letter to Mr. Paul John and expressed my gratitude, and he returned the same and thanked me for the wonderful story that they would use on their web site.  I was freed from the mind lock of Morphine and I wanted the World to know how much better I felt.  There are a lot of things in my past that I do not remember, thanks to Morphine, but my life now is wonderful.  I think clearer, I enjoy life more and I am alive again.

Products Tried

At first I tried vaping dried cannabis, it worked, but it was hard on my lungs and finding a strain that would help me was difficult but interesting. Then Cann-Trust was able to sell cannabis oil. This was my ticket. A few drops under the tongue and you are good to go. This was not only convenient, but healthier. With natural medicine, what goes in comes out without damaging the liver, stomach, etc. I use this almost every day now and I am off of the Morphine. It helps relieve the pain, the depression, and the "Fog". The cannabis oil that I use is a one on one, meaning it is 50% THC and 50% CBD. This took about 2 years to find what I needed, but the trip was very interesting and educational.

Patient Experience

How Cannabis has had an impact on patient's day to day life

Since using cannabis I feel alive again. The Morphine "Fog" has left me. I can go on living my life and enjoying things that I once only dreamed that I would be able to do. I have had to use many Pharma Drugs in the past, and none of them even come close to healing the mind and body that cannabis does. Just being able to compose this form would have been an awful effort for me 2 years ago. Cannabis has given me back my Life and I am grateful.

Under Doctor's Supervision?

Yes

Additional doctor supervision information

I see my Doctor on a regular basis and my license to use Cannabis is on a yearly prescription. My Doctor is happy with what is happening to me from using Cannabis. I am subject to a drug test once a year and I am ok with that. I understand that medical cannabis is in it's early stages and that many will abuse it, so I do the tests and see my Doctor and all is good in my Life.

Discontinued Medication

Yes

Additional info about discontinued medication

As I said earlier....I have gone from 210 mg. of Morphine to a mere 30 mg. which we are working at dropping soon. This would not have happened if it were not for Cannabis. Any other medication that I take now is minor, but with the assistance of Cannabis I am sure I could go without it all. It is a process that takes time and I am willing to take this route and to make my life better for doing so.

Cannabis has changed the use of other controlled substances

Not Applicable

Other lifestyle changes adopted along with medical Cannabis

Yes

Additional info about lifestyle changes

I did take a Reiki Course and have a certificate for this avenue of healing. I suppose that it helped and is useful in my daily life, but that was long before I used Medical Cannabis. I would like to think that it helped relax me and gave me another purpose in aiding others in their healing.

Additional info about medical Cannabis experience

After experiencing what Cannabis can do for the body,, I can only say ,that I believe it should be available to anyone who wishes to try it for relief of any disorder. I do not use alcohol, or any other illicit drugs, but I am sure that using Medical Cannabis in lieu of any of these would make our World a better place to be. I would rather be in a room of people using Cannabis than in a room of people drinking alcohol. The Cannabis experience has been a saving grace for me. I think clearer, I understand better, I am without pain when I use it, and that is just fine with me. I do not use it if I have to drive as it relaxes me too much for that.
