Overall health, well-being and quality of life before medical cannabis

Before I began using medical cannabis, I had insomnia and had troubles managing my anxiety throughout the day. I was a university student at the time, and I would often lay awake for hours at night trying to get to sleep. I would be running circles in my mind about, “what assignments were coming up?”, “Am I forgetting about a test?”, and “What grades would I be getting back this week?”. It was tough because the worse my insomnia would get, the harder my anxiety would be to calm the next day. It was a vicious cycle, but I managed to get by for a long time.

Additional info about this time in patient's life

I really enjoyed this period in my life. Trying new products was almost always enjoyable for me especially because I had an experienced user I shared the experience with. My boyfriend always told me how much I should take and we always aired on the side of caution. Start low and go slow.

Patient Process

Path to cannabis

I met my boyfriend at the time who is a regular cannabis user. He introduced me to vaping cannabis which for me, was perfect. I reacted very strongly to cannabis during this time in my life and the vape pen allowed me to take very small, regulated amounts that wouldn’t make me feel too high.

Products Tried

I started by trying the vape pen. Then, once that wasn't enough for me, I began smoking ~0.3g of cannabis in the evening. Since starting, I have also tried tinctures and edibles as well. All products work for me in different ways and I have specific products I enjoy depending on how I am feeling. Indicia strains of cannabis in the form of a joint or edible are best for helping me get to sleep and stay asleep. I have also started using CBD products on a regular basis which helps me manage my anxiety throughout the day.

Patient Experience

How Cannabis has had an impact on patient's day to day life

I now smoke or ingest cannabis every day, usually after 7pm to help me relax at night. I find that even though I don't consume THC products during working hours, my anxiety and stress is easier to manage. I think it's because I get that break in the evenings that I never used to get before being introduced to cannabis. Otherwise, my day-to-day activities have not changed dramatically but I find I have a more calm, more positive outlook on life.

Cannabis has changed the use of other controlled substances

Additional info about controlled substance use

I definitely drink a lot less since starting to use medical cannabis. It isn't like one replaces the other, but I just find that I don't like the feeling of being "drunk" anymore.

Other lifestyle changes adopted along with medical Cannabis

Additional info about lifestyle changes

One of my favourite activities is ganja yoga. I never used to be very into yoga, but since starting to use cannabis, I absolutely love it. I find that the quiet time to stretch and move my body is amplified by the cerebral effects of cannabis.

Additional info about medical Cannabis experience

I never thought about cannabis as a medicine until more recently. There's such a stigma around it and it never used to be "prescribed" per-say, so I never categorized it as medicine in my head. However, since I've learned more about it, I really do consider it medicine. Nothing helps me sleep better than cannabis and it's positively impacted my life in so many ways. I recommend cannabis to most of my family members now. I think so many could benefit from the effects of cannabis.
